Extended School Year (ESY)

Attending school for approximately 180 days simply does not work for all students. Some students need more time than this in order to truly learn the content and classroom expectations. Therefore, an Extended School Year (ESY) is needed for some students receiving special education. ESY is so helpful because it reduces summer learning loss and helps students work on emerging skills and acceptable behavior. However, not all students who qualify will want to be in school during summer break. Thus, it is so important to have engaging, hands-on resources ready to go! Thankfully, the resources highlighted on my Facebook Live are all filled with fun and exciting ways to work on academics. Check out my Facebook live for more exciting teaching strategies and resources!

Summer Basic Skills Worksheet

Basic skills are anything but basic! They are ESSENTIAL! This includes numbers, letters, colors, and shapes. It is so important to have a strong grasp of these skills because they are the foundation for so many aspects in life. Yes, not just in school, but life in general. Therefore, taking time to review these skills in a fun summer format is vital.

What’s included in the basic skills worksheet?

This set of 17 worksheets is no prep! All you have to do is print or load to Google slides! Even better, all of the activities are engaging ways to celebrate summer with students! There are 3 pages with number practice from 1 through 10. Then, there are 3 pages of lowercase letters and 3 pages of uppercase letters. Included letters are A, Y, G, T, X, Q, O, J, E, N, L, R, V, B, and G. Next, there are 4 pages on matching the colors red, purple, blue, green, yellow, white, pink, and orange. Lastly, there are 4 pages on matching the shapes circle, triangle, heart, diamond, rectangle, star, square, and oval. Every activity is filled with fun summer images, such as sandcastles, crabs, and sunglasses! There is also a clipart on the pages for students to color, which means they are also practicing fine motor skills.

Summer Basic Skills BOOM Cards

If you haven’t tried BOOM Cards yet, they will be a game-changer for your students! They are interactive cards that self-grade, which means students are provided instant feedback! Thus, if the child answers incorrectly, they will be prompted to try again. If the answer is correct, the deck will automatically move to the next question.

There are 5 decks included in this bundle, so students will be able to practice a variety of content in a comfortable format. Specifically, students will practice colors, counting, shapes, and uppercase/lowercase letters. Each question card has 3 answer choices for students to select from. To help build engagement, each deck is filled with fun summer images, such as the beach!

Summer Learning: CVC Word BOOM Cards

Since students are going to love BOOM Cards so much, another set is ready for CVC words. There are 20 different words, including top, rug, and ten. Here, students will practice identifying pictures that match the CVC word. Thankfully, the cards are also filled with differentiation. For instance, the word is written and there is an audio button where the word will be said aloud. Therefore, if students are struggling with reading, they can also have the word automatically read to them!

This is also a common accommodation in an IEP,  so no extra prep work is needed. By having this feature, they won’t have to wait for help, so no time will be wasted. Students will then click on one of the three options that match the word. To help ensure all time is well spent, each card will also self-grade. This means that students will not go on unless they truly know the word.

Why I  love these summer learning resources?

These summer learning resources are perfect for Extended School Year and all no prep, high-quality activities in order to help students during summer break. They are all interactive and hands-on, which means students will be active in their learning process. Instead of sitting back listening, students will be focused, engaged, and determined to learn everything they can!

Change, and just life, isn’t easy. The past 6+ months have been a rollercoaster emotionally and mentally.

Ups and downs must be a part of life, shaping us in ways we often don’t realize in the moment. I’m learning to trust the process, to believe that each challenge and triumph has a purpose. Here’s to growing through it all, one step at a time.

I’m beyond grateful for the ones who check in, who remind me I’m not alone, and who stay by my side through it all.

If you’re feeling this way too, know you’re not alone. Life most definitely isn’t meant to be perfect, and I have no intention of making it seem that way on here ❤️
